Silverlight Deployment Troubleshooting Guide

February 17th, 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

After helping a few customers with Silverlight install issues, I think it may be helpful to publish a Silverlight deployment troubleshooting guide and keep it up-to-date, so here you go.

Troubleshooting Steps

  • Is Silverlight installed?
on Windows, make sure “Microsoft Silverlight” is in Control Panel –> Programs and Features:
    check Silverlight in appwiz.cpl
On Mac, make sure /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Silverlight.plugin is there. If Silverlight isn’t installed, you can install the latest version from http://www.silverlight.net or http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight.
  • Is Silverlight enabled?
For Internet Explorer, select menu item Tools –> Manage Add-ons, make sure Microsoft Silverlight is enabled for all web sites:
Make sure Silverlight is enabled with IE For Firefox, select menu item Tools –> Add-ons, click Plugins tab, make sure Silverlight Plug-In is enabled:
Make sure Silverlight is enabled with Firefox
  • Is the issue site specific?
try http://silverlight.net: if you see the showcase Silverlight application on the top right of the page, then your issue is likely to be site specific, please report the issue to the site owner. O/w, please click the Forums tab at http://silverlight.net page, search and/or report the issue there.
  • Is the issue browser specific?
try open the page in a different browser (IE/Firefox/Chrome on Windows, Safari/Firefox/Chrome on Mac) and see whether the issue repros. If it doesn’t repro, it is likely to be a browser specific configuration issue. Again, it may help to search http://forums.silverlight.net to see whether this is a known issue; and if not, report it.

Report Silverlight Setup Issue

When you report a Silverlight setup issue, it’d help a lot if you can include the following information:

  • a short description of the issue
  • operating system and browser you are using
  • the site you are having problem with
  • Silverlight setup log: under %temp% folder (like C:\Users\ningz\AppData\Local\Temp on Win7 or C:\Documents and Settings\ningz\Local Settings\Temp on WinXP), there are two files: a short Silverlight0.log and a longer SilverlightMSI.log).

Other Helpful Sources

This is first version, I will keep adding content to the post and keep it up to date with issues I see reported. Thanks!

I just wanted to congratulate NBC & everyone affiliated with the Vancouver Olympics. The coverage was simply outstanding. You covered everything from A to Z >>the good, bad, the sadness & overwhelming joy & the “Agony of Defeat”!!!!(remember that?) My family & I looked forward to every nights coverage & enjoyed every minute of it. Hats off to Vancouver, CANADA!!!!!!! What a beautiful event they produced >>>with all the planning, work & volunteers etc. It was simply marvelous!!!!!!! I will miss it. Again congratulation to all of NBC, keep up the good work. G Grant from Illinois!!!!!!

    Hello~
The outcome of the Women’s 3000m relay held on the 24th was absurd.
The South Korean was already skating in the inner course (they did not block another skater’s route) before the Chinese at which the Chinese’s aggressively tried to over take the position. During their effort to aggressively take the South Korean’s position, the Chinese skater’s left skate hit the Korean skater’s skates. This was obviously wrong skating by the Chinese and came too close to the Korean skater. The Chinese in fact bumped into the Korean and distracted the Koreans. When the two skates collided the Chinese skater lost balace and fell behind. This was all in the Chinese players doing and there is no reason why the Korean should be responsible for the Chinese skater’s wrong judgement and pay the price.

These athletes gave up everything for the olympics for this one moment. But one person’s wrong judgement call cost them the medal that symbolizes their hard work and effort that they deserve.

One person should not be the judge of these players hard work if they can not deliver fair, unbiased and impartial judgement or if they already have a record of wrong judgment calls. I strongly feel that this issue should not be ignored. I remember during the opening ceremony when there was a representative from the players and the judges who oath to play a fair game and to judge a fair game. But obviously the judges in short track are failing to deliver a fair and clean judgement that they promised. Olympics is meant to represents the best and only the best athletes world wide. If this issue is not taken care of or even looked into, that would give a message world wide that Olympics is not about judging the best and bringing out the best atheletes. And I also believe that it was wrong for the IOC to let a judge who already has shown to give unfair judgements to judge in such a big game.

    GOOD EVENING,

wHY DOES NBC SHOW ONLY THE TOP FIVE MEDAL WINNING COUNTRIES? PLEASE SHOW THEM ALL ON SOME OCCASIONS. SUPPOSE U.S. WERE IN SEVENTH PLACE, WHAT WOULD YOU SHOW? SUPPOSE YOU WERE WATCHING FROM A SMALL COUNTRY, WHICH JUST WON ITS FIRST MEDAL? HOW WOULD THEY FEEL ABOUT THE EGO OF THE AMERICANS IN SHOWING ONLY THE BIG WINNERS? PLEASE CONSIDER THIS. THANK YOU

Make it work on Safari, or use something standard. Period. After third attempt to do something I resented in the first place, I give up.

I get this after watching the USA vs SUI game. In addition, I’ve been watching hocky fine untll today. WTF NBC and Microsoft? Stop with this bulls*&t.

Microsoft Silverlight cannot be used in browsers running in 64 bit mode. This Web browser or operating system may not be compatible with Silverlight. Please review the system requirements and, if you wish to proceed, choose the link for your operating system.

I was watching the games with no problem until today. Why now NBC and MS?

It’s disturbing to have to be forced to install a device I don’t want in order to watch my country compete in the olympics. I’m disappointed in NBC. What’s up with you guys.

The video plays fine in the browser, however, full screen does NOT work if I have an external monitor plugged into my 13″ Macbook Pro (latest edition), each screen is set to display different content (eg. desktop spanning), and I try to play the video on the external monitor itself (eg. the browser is in the external monitor screen). Full screen mode seems to be ok if I don’t have an external monitor connected, or if I turn on mirroring.

I have the latest version of Silverlight installed (installed on Monday this week from the NBC Olympics website). I’m running Safari 64bit on Snow Leopard (10.6) I’ve rebooted the computer since installing Silverlight.
